Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my family now?

The old free route (Refugee Family Reunion) was suspended on 4 September 2025. You now need to use the standard family visa (Appendix FM). There are income, language and fee requirements.

What income do I need?

At least £29,000 per year. This must be from employment — benefits do not count. If your income is lower, you can use savings (you need £62,500 in your account). Your partner's income abroad does not count.

How much does it cost for a family of 3?

Application fee: £1,938 per person. Health surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year per person. For a family of 3 (spouse + 2 children) that is about £8,900. It used to be free.

Do I need to speak English?

Your spouse needs to pass an English test at A1 level (basic). This means: understand simple phrases, introduce yourself, answer simple questions. Children under 18 do not need a test.

What if I don't earn £29,000?

Options: 1) Talk to a lawyer — you may be able to apply under Article 8 ECHR (right to family life). 2) Wait for the court decision (May 2026). 3) If you have exceptional circumstances, you can apply outside the rules. Always get legal advice.

What is the court case in May 2026?

Safe Passage is challenging the suspension in court. Permission for the hearing was granted in February 2026. If the court rules in favour of refugees, the rules may change. Follow the news.
