Other benefits
Help for children
Asylum support ends 42 days after status (March 2026 rule — earlier the pilot was 56 days, then back to 28).
First UC payment takes 5 weeks to arrive.
UC cannot be backdated to your asylum decision date (that rule applied only to Tax Credits — now closed, and to Child Benefit — up to 3 months). Standard UC backdating is max 1 month under narrow conditions.
If you apply late, there will be a gap with no money and no housing. Ask for an advance payment of up to 100% of your UC if you need money now (deductions capped at 15% of standard allowance).
Frequently asked questions
When should I apply for Universal Credit?
On the first day after getting refugee status. Asylum support ends after 42 days (March 2026 rule), but the first UC payment takes 5 weeks. If you apply late, you could be left with no money. UC cannot be backdated to the date of your asylum decision — max 1 month under narrow conditions.
Can asylum seekers get Universal Credit?
No. UC is only for people with Refugee Status or Humanitarian Protection. Asylum seekers get NASS support.
What is an advance payment?
If you cannot survive 5 weeks until your first UC payment, ask for an advance payment at your first Job Centre meeting. Up to 100% of your UC, taken back from future payments in small amounts (deduction cap is 15% of standard allowance since April 2025).
How do I get an HC2 certificate?
Fill in an HC1 form (get it from a pharmacy, GP or download it). Send it by post. The HC2 certificate arrives in about 21 days. It gives you free prescriptions, dentist and glasses.
Do I need to work to get UC?
No, you can get UC without working. But you will have a work coach at the Job Centre who will ask you to look for work. If you are ill or caring for children, you can get an exemption (LCW or LCWRA — see below).
Can I get Child Benefit and UC at the same time?
Yes! Child Benefit is a separate payment, not means-tested. Apply for both. Child Benefit from April 2026: £27.05/week for the first child, £17.90 for each additional child. Child Benefit can be backdated up to 3 months from when you were notified of your refugee status.
Has the two-child limit been abolished?
Yes — from 6 April 2026 the two-child limit on UC is gone. UC now pays a child element for every child, with no cap. If you previously got UC for only 2 of your 3+ children, the extra should be added automatically. If not by May/June 2026, post a message in your UC journal.
What is LCWRA and how much does it pay?
Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity — a UC top-up for people who cannot work due to physical or mental health (PTSD, severe depression, chronic conditions). +£429.80/month if your claim or WCA decision is dated before 6 April 2026 (protected rate). +£217.26/month for new claims after that. Get a fit note from your GP, ask your Work Coach for a WCA referral. Backdated to month 4 — usually paid as a lump sum.
