Frequently asked questions
Where do I look for housing in the UK?
Russian-speaking groups on Telegram, Facebook (London Russian Community Housing), VK groups. Also: Spareroom.com, Gumtree, OpenRent — English-language but the largest. For asylum seekers — Section 95 housing via Migrant Help (0808 8010 503).
What is Section 95 housing?
Free housing from the Home Office for asylum seekers while their case is being decided. You receive a hotel or dispersal accommodation in any UK city (often not London). Plus £49.18/week for food. Requested via Migrant Help.
Can I rent housing without immigration status?
Asylum seekers can technically rent privately (if someone is willing to let), but landlords must check Right to Rent — which asylum seekers don't have. In practice, accommodation is found through friends or shared housing. Once you receive refugee status, Right to Rent kicks in automatically.
What if my host refuses to keep hosting me?
Under the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, the council is required to help — call your local council housing department and say "I am at risk of homelessness". Don't wait until you're actually on the street. Emergency hostels via charities are also available.
