Having no access to student finance is not a condition here: people with recognised refugee status who already receive a student loan can apply.

How to apply

  1. Confirm you are an experienced teacher who is a refugee or has previously held refugee status, currently teaching English to refugees/asylum seekers in the UK
  2. Meet the University of Exeter's Master's entrance criteria, including its Profile B2 English language standard
  3. Read 'Information about Hornby Refugee Scholarship' and download the 'Refugee Scholarship Application form' (.docx) from the Hornby Trust site
  4. Complete and submit the application form while the call is open (most recent call, for 2025/26, is now closed)

How they select

There is no interview — the decision is made on documents. On most routes there are no subject entrance exams either: the main hurdle on the way into university is proving your level of English. The exceptions are medicine, dentistry and creative courses, where tests and portfolios do appear.
