University and Scholarship Applications Support

This is not a scholarship. There is no money or fee discount here — it is admission support: a visit, a consultation, an open day or a preparatory programme. Useful as a first contact with the university, but funding for study has to be found separately.

The student finance condition

Open to applicants who do receive student finance

Having no access to student finance is not a condition here: people with recognised refugee status who already receive a student loan can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to wait for an offer — the scholarship application can run alongside admission.

Check your eligibility on the 'Apply for support' page before applying
Choose the matching application pathway: 'Employment, Education, or Skills building' (university/scholarship mentoring sits within Skills building) or 'Reaccreditation or Language tuition'
Submit your details via the relevant online referral form so the team can get in touch
If matched, support can include a volunteer mentor for a first-time university application, workshops, and help with personal statements, UCAS applications and scholarship applications

How they select

There is no interview — the decision is made on documents. On most routes there are no subject entrance exams either: the main hurdle on the way into university is proving your level of English. The exceptions are medicine, dentistry and creative courses, where tests and portfolios do appear.

About the institution

Breaking Barriers is a UK charity (not a university) headquartered at WeWork Aldwych, 71–91 Aldwych, London WC2B 4HN, with programmes also running in other UK cities such as Glasgow. Eligibility for its support programmes generally requires being 18+ with refugee status, discretionary leave to remain, humanitarian protection, or asylum seeker status with the right to work.
