The student finance condition

This scheme is for people without access to government student finance — usually asylum seekers and some limited-leave categories. If you have refugee status and can access student finance, this is normally not for you.

How to apply

You need a place first: apply to the programme and wait for an offer. Scholarship applications are only considered from people who already hold one.

  1. Apply through UCAS as a new full-time first-year undergraduate entrant and receive a conditional or unconditional offer from City St George's
  2. Complete the official Sanctuary Scholarship application form via the Qualtrics link provided by the university
  3. Write a personal statement covering your rationale for higher education, any interruptions to your prior education, and your support needs
  4. Provide a referee statement in support of your application
  5. Submit supporting documentation including evidence of your immigration status
  6. Submit everything before the deadline of 1 May 2026

There is no interview — the decision is made on documents. On most routes there are no subject entrance exams either: the main hurdle on the way into university is proving your level of English. The exceptions are medicine, dentistry and creative courses, where tests and portfolios do appear.
