University Centre Scholarship — asylum seeker award

What it gives
full tuition waiver
Fee waiver only, no cash stipend
Who it is for
asylum seeker (claim pending) · limited or discretionary leave
This scheme does not accept recognised refugee status — its terms narrow the field of applicants.
Level of study: undergraduate
The student finance condition
Only if you cannot access student finance
This scheme is for people without access to government student finance — usually asylum seekers and some limited-leave categories. If you have refugee status and can access student finance, this is normally not for you.

How to apply

  1. Hold an offer of a place on a full-time undergraduate degree or Foundation Degree at NCUC
  2. Complete the online application form on the NCUC website
  3. Write a supporting statement (250-500 words) addressing financial need, academic potential and development potential
  4. Optionally upload additional supporting documents to strengthen the application
  5. Submit by the deadline: 21 August 2026

  • What happens to the payments if I am granted refugee status mid-year?

About the institution

NCUC (formerly Newcastle College University Centre). Applications are reviewed by the College's Scholarship Committee of academic and non-academic staff, with the chair deciding split votes. Asylum seeker applicants are exempt from the standard student finance application requirement. Award is one year of full tuition fee waiver (e.g. for a top-up degree or Certificate of Higher Education), not renewable beyond that period.
