What's useful to know about certified translation

Which translators are accepted by the Home Office?

Only UK-certified translators — members of CIOL (Chartered Institute of Linguists) or ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting). Translation must have a stamp, signature, statement of truth and contact details. Translations from CIS countries are usually NOT accepted.

Does Court / Tribunal accept the same certified translation?
📌 Key fact: At court hearings oral interpretation is provided free through thebigword or Clear Voice — no need to bring your own.

HM Courts & Tribunals Service accepts translations from CIOL Chartered Linguists or ITI Qualified Members.

Do I need an NHS-registered translator for a doctor?

The NHS provides an interpreter free of charge — ask your GP at registration or via 111 Language Line. For your own documents any CIOL/ITI translator is fine. For medical terminology prefer those with an NHS panel note.

Is notarisation of the translation required?

For the Home Office — no, a stamp and statement of truth from a CIOL/ITI translator are enough. Notary Public is only needed for documents sent abroad or to embassies. Apostille — a separate procedure via FCDO Legalisation Office.
