Can I study for free as a refugee?
Yes. ESOL (English classes) are free with an ARC card. Colleges are free from age 16 to 18. After 19 — free if you are a refugee or asylum seeker waiting 6+ months. University — through student finance and scholarships.
What is ESOL?
ESOL means English for Speakers of Other Languages. Free English classes for people living in the UK. Levels from zero (Pre-Entry) to advanced (Level 2). Classes 2-4 times a week at your local college.
Will the UK recognise my degree from another country?
You need to check through UK ENIC (used to be called NARIC). Cost from £49.50. They compare your qualification to UK levels. Doctors, nurses, engineers also need separate professional registration.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship means you study and work at the same time. You work 4 days and study 1 day a week. You get paid (minimum £7.55/hour). Your employer pays for training. Levels from 2 to 7 (master's degree).
Can I go to university as a refugee?
Yes. Refugees can get student finance (same as UK citizens). You apply through UCAS. 80+ universities offer special scholarships for refugees. You need English at IELTS 6.0-6.5 or equivalent.
