🪜 What ESOL is

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages — English for people whose first language is something else. Courses run at FE colleges (further education — colleges for adults and for young people over 16) and at charities. This is not IELTS preparation — it is practical English for everyday life and work. You move up step by step from Entry 1 (A1) to Level 2 (B2), and that opens the door to further education.

Functional Skills English and ESOL — what is the difference?

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

A programme for people whose first language is not English. It covers all 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening. It does not give you academic points, but it prepares you for Functional Skills or IELTS.

Functional Skills English Level 2

An official Ofqual-regulated RQF Level 2 qualification. Many universities accept it instead of GCSE English Grade 4/C. You need a solid B2 level to pass. It is not the same as ESOL. Details are on the page "Functional Skills".

Pre-sessional English at universities

6–24 weeks

Many universities run Pre-sessional English programmes — intensive courses lasting 6–24 weeks in the summer before your degree starts. They let students with IELTS 5.5–6.0 reach the required 6.5 by the time the programme ends.
