Frequently asked questions
What should I do in the first 42 days after getting status?
Apply for Universal Credit (first payment takes about 5 weeks — do not delay!), find housing (Section 95 ends), get your NI number, register with a GP, open a bank account. Full checklist: /after-status.html
Can I work as an asylum seeker?
Only after 12 months of waiting and if the delay is not your fault. You need Permission to Work from the Home Office. After getting status (refugee / HP / LTR) you can work without restrictions.
What benefits are available?
Universal Credit (the main one), Child Benefit (if you have children), Housing Benefit (help with rent), HC2 certificate (free prescriptions, dentist, glasses). All through Jobcentre Plus.
How do I open a bank account?
Monzo, Starling, Revolut — no proof of address needed. Traditional banks (Lloyds, HSBC, Barclays) need ARC/BRP + proof of address. Asylum seekers get an ASPEN card.
Where do I take my children to school?
Children aged 5–16 must attend school. Contact your local council's education department. They must provide a school place regardless of your status. Free school meals are available for asylum seekers.
What is eVisa?
The digital status that replaced the BRP card (from 2025). Your immigration status is stored online. Employers and landlords check it through gov.uk. BRP cards stopped working on 31 December 2024.
