Each level — in simple words

🔤 GCSE — school exams (Level 2)
Exams at age 16. All children in the UK take them. Grades from 9 (best) to 1. For most jobs you need GCSE maths and English with grade 4 or higher. Adults can also take GCSEs — free at college.
📚 A-Level — for university entry (Level 3)
Exams at age 18. Students choose only 3-4 subjects. They study them deeply for 2 years. Grades A*-E. Universities look at A-Level results when you apply. Adults can do Access to HE instead — a 1-year alternative to A-Levels.
🛠️ BTEC — practical education (Level 2-3)
Hands-on learning with fewer exams. Available in business, IT, health, construction and more. In the UK, BTEC is respected — it is not "less than" A-Level. You can go to university with BTEC Level 3.
🚀 Access to HE — fast track to university
A special course for adults (19+). Takes 1 year. It replaces A-Levels for university entry. Perfect for refugees — no need to spend 2 years on A-Levels. Free if you are 19+ and a refugee.
🎓 Bachelor's degree (Level 6)
First university degree. In England — 3 years (4 in Scotland). Costs £9,250/year, but refugees get student finance — you only pay back when you earn £25K+ per year.
🏆 Master's degree (Level 7)
Second degree. In the UK — 1 year (not 2!). Very intensive. Costs £10-15K. Scholarships available for refugees (Chevening, CARA, university-specific). Postgraduate loan up to £12,167.

Key differences from other countries

School is longer. Children study until 18 (not 17). That is why university is shorter.
You specialise early. From age 16, students choose 3-4 subjects only. No general education after 16.
Practical skills are valued. BTEC (vocational) is equal to A-Level. You can enter university with a vocational diploma.
Flexible system. Adults can start at any level. No age limits. A 40-year-old can study GCSEs at college — this is normal.
