Universal Credit and studying — key rules
- Lone parents (students responsible for a child)
- Disabled students who hold PIP/DLA/ADP and were assessed as having Limited Capability for Work (LCW) by DWP before starting the course
- Some other narrow circumstances (gov.uk/guidance/universal-credit-and-students)
- UC is reduced by £1 for every £1 of maximum Maintenance Loan you are entitled to — whether or not you draw it down.
- The first £110 per assessment period is disregarded.
- Tuition Fee Loans are completely excluded from the calculation.
- The Special Support Element of the maintenance loan is also disregarded by DWP — it does not reduce UC.
If you are a lone parent or disabled student: ensure your SFE entitlement letter clearly identifies the Special Support Element as a separate line. If it is not coded correctly, DWP may deduct it from your UC in error.

Frequently asked questions
Can asylum seekers get Student Finance England?
No. Asylum seekers awaiting a Home Office decision cannot access Student Finance England. The only route to higher education during this period is a Sanctuary Scholarship at individual universities.
Do refugees have to wait 3 years to access SFE?
No. People with refugee status, humanitarian protection, or Ukraine Scheme status access SFE immediately — the 3-year residency rule is waived.
Can you claim Universal Credit while studying full-time at university?
Generally no. Full-time students are normally excluded from UC. Exceptions apply to lone parents and disabled students assessed as having Limited Capability for Work by DWP before starting the course.
What is the Special Support Element of the maintenance loan?
The Special Support Element is a portion of the Maintenance Loan available to lone parents and certain disabled students. DWP must not deduct it from Universal Credit. The exact annual amount changes each academic year — check the current figure directly with SFE.
What does the Tuition Fee Loan cover and how is it paid?
The Tuition Fee Loan covers tuition fees — up to £9,535 (2025-26) or £9,790 (2026-27). It is paid directly to the university, with no means testing. Repayment starts only once you earn above £25,000 per year.
Does SFE fund a Foundation Year?
Yes, but only an Integrated Foundation Year (IFY) — a Year 0 built into a four-year degree at the university itself. Private commercial foundation programmes are not funded by SFE.
