How to verify a lawyer yourself
- SRA Solicitor: sra.org.uk/consumers/register — search by firm name or SRA number. The register shows current status, disciplinary findings, and languages spoken.
- IAA Adviser: gov.uk/find-an-immigration-adviser — the IAA number starts with F (legacy OISC) or N. Shows the level (L1/L2/L3).
- BSB Barrister: barstandardsboard.org.uk/find-a-barrister — search by name.
- Legal Aid contract: find-legal-advice.justice.gov.uk — enter postcode and case type (asylum). Contract lists are refreshed annually.
- SRA disciplinary record: sra.org.uk/consumers/solicitor-check — public.
⚠️ Warning: in February 2026 the SRA intervened against Litkraft Solicitors (part of the PM Law Group) — a suspected fraud investigation involving £39.5 million of client funds is underway. If any source recommends this firm, decline. Law Society Gazette source.
🚫 Warning signs of a bad lawyer
- Asks for £500+ upfront for an asylum consultationAsylum is fully Legal Aid funded. An upfront fee request is a red flag. Verify the Legal Aid contract status before paying.
- "Guarantees" a status or visaNo-one can guarantee a Home Office decision. Any lawyer promising a 100% outcome is misleading you.
- Not registered with SRA, IAA, or BSBGiving immigration advice in the UK without a regulator is a criminal offence (Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, s.84). Avoid.
- Refuses to provide a written engagement letterSRA solicitors are required to issue a written engagement letter setting out scope, price and timing before starting work. Without one, do not pay.
- Works only via WhatsApp or Telegram with no officeA messenger-only "lawyer" with no registered office is almost always unregulated. SRA and IAA require a published address.
Already paid and the lawyer isn't delivering? Complaints against solicitors go to SRA Consumer Protection. Complaints against IAA advisers go to the Immigration Advice Authority. Compensation can be recovered through the Legal Ombudsman or the Solicitors Compensation Fund.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a free Russian-speaking asylum lawyer in the UK?
Of 27 verified Russian-speaking lawyers, 15 hold Legal Aid contracts. The most-evidenced options for refugee and asylum work in London: Elder Rahimi, Duncan Lewis, Wilson Solicitors, Wesley Gryk. In Wales — Legal Centre (Newtown). Free charity IAA advice: East European Resource Centre, Work Rights Centre, Manchester Refugee Support Network.
What is the difference between an SRA solicitor and an IAA adviser?
An SRA solicitor can act in any court and on any matter. An IAA adviser is restricted to immigration work and only up to their registered level: L1 (advice), L2 (First-tier Tribunal), L3 (Upper Tribunal). For an appeal already refused at Tribunal, you need at least an IAA L2 or a solicitor; for Upper Tribunal you need an L3 or a solicitor.
What does "Russian-speaking" mean — how was this verified?
Every entry meets at least one of: (1) the SRA / IAA / BSB register lists Russian under Languages; (2) the firm website has a Russian-language page or explicit "Russian-speaking" statement; (3) a named adviser has a public Russian-fluency bio. HIGH confidence = both regulator and website. MEDIUM = single source. Cross-checked across 3 independent deep-research investigations and manual WebFetch verification of conflicts (May 2026).
What if a lawyer asks for an upfront fee for asylum?
Asylum is fully Legal Aid funded. If a firm with a Legal Aid contract asks for upfront payment, this is a breach. Check Legal Aid status at find-legal-advice.justice.gov.uk. Complain to SRA (solicitor), Immigration Advice Authority (IAA adviser), or Bar Standards Board (barrister).
I don't qualify for Legal Aid — what are my options?
If you don't pass the means test (income above the threshold) or your case isn't covered by Legal Aid (for example a work visa or family route), the list includes private Russian-speaking firms — Sterling Law, Reiss Edwards, Melrose. Prices range from £150 for a consultation to £3,000–10,000 for a full case. Compare 2–3 firms and ask for a written engagement letter before signing.
Are there Russian-speaking lawyers in Scotland and Wales?
Our list covers England and Wales. Scotland is a separate jurisdiction with its own register of solicitors — search via the Law Society of Scotland (lawscot.org.uk). Wales: Legal Centre (Newtown) is in the list. Northern Ireland: we found no verified Russian-speaking firms — try Duncan Lewis (a national network) or Law Centre NI with an interpreter.
What about Litkraft Solicitors?
Avoid. In February 2026 the SRA intervened against Litkraft (part of the PM Law Group) — a suspected £39.5m client-funds fraud investigation is underway. This firm is NOT in our directory and should not appear on any reliable referral list.
Important: StartNewLife UK is not a law firm or immigration advice provider. This page is a referral directory only — not immigration advice within the meaning of the UK Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, s.84. We do not recommend specific lawyers and do not provide individual legal advice. Every lawyer listed is regulated by the SRA, IAA or BSB — verify their status on the public registers before instructing. Data was verified on 2026-05-27 from 3 sources; Legal Aid contract status may change (always check gov.uk for current data).
