First sittings: September 2026. Part 2 capacity grows: 720 → 944 → 1,500/year over 3 years. This removes a bottleneck — more access to exam slots, shorter queues.

ORE pathway step by step

STEP 1 · ENIC + IELTS (3-6 months)

UK ENIC Statement of Comparability £25.60 charity rate. IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, 6.5 in each section OR OET Dentistry Grade B. Specialised dental English — limited free options.

STEP 2 · GDC APPLICATION (2-3 months)

Application processing fee £96. Apply via the refugee priority track if you have status. Alternative evidence for documents from war-zone countries (Russia, Syria, Afghanistan).

STEP 3 · ORE PART 1 (6-12 months prep)

Written exam — multiple-choice + extended matching questions. £584. 4 attempts max. UK location. Once passed, the 5-year clock starts for Part 2.

STEP 4 · ORE PART 2 (12-24 months prep)

Clinical OSCE. £4,235. 4 attempts max within the 5-year clock. From September 2026 — UCL Consortium provider. Capacity is growing. Critical for clinical skills retention — many refugees need clinical practice (PLVE, observerships).

STEP 5 · GDC REGISTRATION + DFT

Registration application ~£890. Annual Retention Fee (ARF) 2026: £698 (+12.4%). Then — DFT (Dental Foundation Training), 1 year of NHS work, salary £40,776 (2024-25).

NHS dental contract reform April 2026: mandatory 3-year NHS tie-in for newly qualified dentists — you must work in the NHS for the first 3 years.

Alternatives to the ORE

📜 LDS RCS (Licence in Dental Surgery, RCS England)

Alternative legacy route via the Royal College of Surgeons. Limited intake (a few cohorts/year). Comparable difficulty to the ORE. Less competition but also less availability. Verify current status — periodically opens/closes.

🦷 PLVE (Performer List Validation by Experience)

Not an alternative to the ORE as such, but a pathway onto the NHS performer list after registration. The clinical experience requirement has been cut from 2,000 → 1,600 hours. Helps with the transition into the NHS.
