FAQ

Useful things to know about these organisations

What's a Charity Commission number?

The Charity Commission is the government regulator for charities in England and Wales. Every registered charity has a unique 6–7 digit number. Check it at register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk. Scotland uses OSCR, Northern Ireland uses CCNI.

Who do these organisations help — do you need a status?

Most organisations help everyone — whatever your status: people waiting for an asylum decision, people who've been refused, refugees, and people with no documents. Services are free.

Where's the nearest food bank (free food)?

Trussell Trust runs a network of 1,400+ food banks across the country. Find your nearest: trusselltrust.org/get-help. You usually need a voucher — from a GP, a social worker, a school, or a charity. Independent food banks (the IFAN network) often accept people without a voucher.

Which organisations help Ukrainians specifically?

Under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, help comes from Opora, Barnardo's, the Red Cross line for Ukrainians, Sanctuary Foundation, and Reset UK. The regular organisations on this list also work with Ukrainians.
