Frequently asked questions
What is GCSE?
GCSE are exams at age 16. All children in the UK take them. Grades from 9 (best) to 1. For most jobs you need GCSE maths and English with grade 4+. Adults can also take GCSEs for free at college.
What is A-Level?
A-Levels are exams at age 18. Students choose only 3-4 subjects and study them deeply for 2 years. Grades A*-E. Universities look at your A-Level results. Adults can do Access to HE instead — a 1-year alternative.
Is a bachelor's degree really 3 years?
Yes, in England a bachelor's is 3 years (4 in Scotland). This is a full degree. UK school goes until 18, so university is shorter than in many countries where school ends at 17.
What is BTEC?
BTEC is practical education. More hands-on work, fewer exams. Available in business, IT, health, construction. BTEC Level 3 is accepted by universities — same value as A-Levels.
Do I need IELTS?
For university — usually IELTS 6.0-6.5. For college — no, just a placement test. For ILR (permanent residence) — you need B1 (IELTS 4.0). For citizenship — also B1.
